I've done a bit of binding fabrication . First , used the bandsaw to get some mahogany a little over 3/8 thick and ran it through the 13" planer to get it a little over .250" var (15).jpg
Then cut off .120 +- slices and hand planed them down to .095 or so .
It used up some good wood , but I got something I can work with .var (8).jpg

Now I got to get up the nerve to build a router guide and cut some grooves in the sides to glue these bad boy's in .
Piece of cake .
I think it would be easier to jump out of a perfectly good airplane .

That's going to be one sharp guitar! I like wood binding on a guitar, but not many people do it because the plastic binding is so much easier to apply. Have you been thinking about a headstock shape yet?

Bud...I need more! This thread is like a drug. I'm sure when you finish I'm going to have withdrawals. I plan to live vicariously through you on this one because I tend to have some-what-infinite patience, but it seems you have patience times infinity squared!!

By the way is that Bailey a type 11?

Nevermind...the type 11 comment. I can see the ring under the front knob and the stanley camouflaged by the shavings. Maybe a 14 or 15?

Did you get all your hardware from Stewart McDonald?
Did you buy the bridge pins or are you going to be making them too?

Hi !
Answers :
Neck from scratch , headstock shape , dunno yet .

The plane I got a dozen , various , of them from a friend whose a shop teacher . Some work , some are pretty beat up . No idea what type . Mostly jack # 5 , smoothing and a 6 1/2 block .

I picked up some fretwire and tuner's from a local music store .
Bridge pins , too . It would be cool to make some kind of pencil sharpener style device to make them , though .
Got some tool's from Stu Mac , fret rule , saw , binding tape , & trussrod .

Got a little side tracked from the build . My old D-28 took a spill and snapped the headstock . Made some caul's from cork and plastic ,
Filled the break with titebond , clamped for two hours and it is now resting for a week before any cosmetic work is done .
Hope to get some work done soon .
Thank's ,

Bud

Ouch! I just bought my first Martin about 8 months ago. One of their "affordable" models. Well worth it though, it's my favorite!

Bud, I have been following this thread since the beginning. Have you bothered to figure out cost as of yet? Do you have an estimation of what this guitar is going to end up costing you by the time it is finished. It really doesn't matter. It is just a curiosity question. I'm sure, that no matter what the cost, the time that you spent making it (especially with your little shop helper) is worth more than the dollar value.
Great job.

If you buy a kit they run between $400 and $500. It all depends how extravagant you want to get. google PRS Dragon.

Hi ,
Got a little work done in preparation for routing the binding channel's today . I needed a depth guide so I built one .gui1.jpg Here it is assembled .gui2.jpg I plan to do some test cut's on scrap and then add a locater pin to keep the jig dead on .
Next I gave the spruce top a wash coat of 2 lb dewaxed shellac so it would fuzz/ tear out less when the router bit bites .gui3.jpg

It's tough to say the total cost right now , Near 250 .00 . I am making many part's myself out of wood I collected over the years .That don't count tool's , sandpaper , wood for form's & jig's , blades etc.
Hope to get the binding's & end graft done by Sunday .

Bud

You are brave for using a full size router. They make binding cutters for the dremel. The dremel is a lot easier to control for delicate work IMHO.

I hope that guitar plays as swell as it looks! That's really good work!
(translation - more pictures! more pictures!) Just kidding. I hope to build one someday.

Full steam ahead :
Some scary stuff , applying a router to the soundbox .
Because the back has an arch I chucked a 1/4 " dowel in the router and used masking tape on the base to adjust the angle , eyeballing it for square .
Time to bend some mahogany !

I'm glad that it worked out for you. I would hate for you to have to start from the beginning on my guitar after a botched router job. I'm glad my guitar is okay. (I say "my" guitar because I have a birthday coming up and I figured that before you ask what I would like, I would just come out and throw a sledgehammer hint.) I can't wait to play it.

My birthday is also coming up, and since kenbo is generally mean to me, and I have posted more in your thread, and I'm devilishly handsome I was hoping I could potentially get the guitar as a birthday gift...If that happens I'll send kenbo my used guitar hero for ps2.

All jokes aside...keep up the good work! I'm hooked!!!

Ok ,
Didn't get as far as I wanted to but here's this . Used a violin knife against a staight edge & scored the lines for the end graft .
Just 1/2 to 1/4 "
Chiseled and scored . graft.jpg That was way fun .
Planed the insert from .100 mahog. and used the 9 1/2 block plane to to make this wedge shaped thing graft1.jpg .
And made it fit . & glued it in .graft2.jpg And here it is after some planing and scraping .
graft5.jpg
The kid's are melting down & I must run
Peace
Buddy

Default Bending binding

I broke out the bending iron , water spritzer , and had at it this morning .bindb1.jpg
Got the binding strip's hot enough to "relax" bb2.jpg on the iron , and used the guitar body as a template . bb3.jpg . for the bend's . It's tricky to keep the wood moving to get a smooth curve & not snap the binding strip . I broke my first try , being too abrupt . It will bend when it dang well pleases .
Clamped to "set" and dry overnite .
About 2-1/2 half hour's of work . Some prep and cleanup and maybe I'll get these on this week .

I wonder if they have a make a kit for building a guitar hero controller...That's the only guitar I can play. Keep up the hard work. By the way...is this the first guitar you've built?
