Hiya ! Kicked out the jam' the other day .

Glued the sides to the end block 's today (1).jpg
then while they were drying , shaped the facet on the kerfing strip's P1010003.jpg And cut the slots on the bandsaw
. P1010068.jpg

Then cut out my braces for the top and discovered it riddled with spruce beetle galleries .today (5).jpg
The top 2 brace end's show their dastardly work .
I'll carve that off later .
Then I tapered the body , something I should have done before bending the sides .. Cut paper templates , taped them on and went at it with a very fine dovetail pullsaw .today.jpg
Ran the saw along the form . Kerfed my fingertip .
Time to fix the plumbing !
Peace ,
Bud

More fun this weekend .
Glued on the kerfed strips which provide the gluing surfaces for the top and back . kerfness (3).jpg
Why are the thumbnail's so big ?kerfness (6).jpg
Also drew out the brace locations on the top & fabricated a bridge plate .kerfness (8).jpg

I am thoroughly enjoying this project . I alway's wondered why anyone would use a hand plane in these days of power this and automatic that . Now I know .

That pile of board's is getting shorter .

Awesome project, something I always wanted to do, don't have the skill for it though. I agree, keep the pics coming. I bought the steel string guitar for my 14 year old from Grizzly for Christmas. Not near as intense as this but should be fun and a bonding experience between the boy and I..........

I glued some of the braces on so they could be carved without interference from the "x" brace .
In the second pic , I am trimming the finger braces to abut the "X"
After a lot of finageling , trimming and juggling planes and a couple of chisels .
It need's some tweaking and carving , but soon It will be glued down and the upper and sound hole braces will be next .

Nate , that sounds like a great project for you and your son . My boy is like "EHH ,big deal " It has no batteries or game cartridges.. On the other hand ,
My 6 yr old daughter is actively assisting me rubberbanding clothespins and as a Quality control specialist .

Started bracing the back last night . First I cut some spruce to reinforce the back seam and glued it down . Profiled it rounded then cut for the braces .bb (6).jpg
I resawed some mahogany planed & cut the braces to length , then arched them with the block plane . (the bottom brace is on it's side , You might be able to see it )bb (10).jpg When glued they will pull the back into a gentle dome shape .
I'll glue 'em down tonight & hopefully carve them tomorrow .
Get your shopping done yet ?

More than likely , sometime next year , Kenbo !

More progress of a sort , I glued a brace in the wrong spot and had to carve it off & make a new one DOH! I used chisel's , a razor saw and a heated spatula . (by heat gun) Scary . Then it was carve the braces to length and cut out the brace pockets in the top . Here it is dry fitted .P1010008.jpg
I will glue the top on ,then use individual carved blocks at the brace end's to reinforce .
The back braces , shaped carved , cut to length and glued in place :P1010009.jpg

I'm psyched , it is no longer a pile of guitar shaped pieces of wood !

Have a great holiday's ,

Bud

Cool. I had no idea so much work went into building a guitar like that.

That was my first thought. That's as insane as boat
building, but he has a cute helper. All my helper does
is hide tools and keep the coffee cup full.

Can't wait to see the end product.

Bud, Is this your first? You seem quite organized in the process.

Yep , first guitar . I purchased a book and am involved in an online build-a long at Luthier Learning Center .

So I got some backup at the rough spots by a crackerjack luthier or three.
I know you can't be referring to the organization of my shop .

Glued on the back, glubak.jpg
Then routed flush .routbak1.jpg
That funky looking bone on the left will be the nut and bridge saddle , eventually

Nope .
But I did buy some Grover's and some fretwire .. Baby step's . Scraped the side's , and sealed the back inlay with some CA . today .

Gotta cut binding's out of a'nuther board . Learning exp. there ..
And decide what kind of end graft is non heinous and will make my mistake's look like genius .... Yeah , that's it .
Then , dovetail the neck in and get carving .
Hey , I'm just some guy with a bunch of wedge shaped tool style thing's that is making a guitar shaped thing mostly by hand .

I can't wait to do my first dovetail joint !

Bud!

never seen such a cool project with all the progress updates. It's like a soap opera. I show my wife every time there are new pictures.

I don't know how to play guitar because I'm only good at listening to music but I would love to get into a project that involved.

This may be a stoopud question but the black wire looking tenticle things. Are those some sort of spring or gravity clamp...what is that? Did I miss that post.

Glad you like it . If I can do this , you can too . It's not easy , but it's fun as all get out ...

Those thing's are kite stick's of the fiberglass variety that are a modern adaptation of an age old method of guitar buildage .
Clamp's they are . Run a search on "Go bar deck " .
Straight grained stick's work as well .

And as for playing guitar , I've been faking it since I was 7 yr.s old . No one has noticed .
Keep's you young .

And that's a good thing .

That's really nice.... I've played guitar since I was 12 (about 20 years now) and am just now getting into woodworking... they go hand in hand! Lots of specialized jigs for a luthier! Are you making the neck and fretting it yourself, too?

Very nice!
