Default Variable speed router- Hitachi

I just got a hitachi variable speed router,I never used a variable speed router so here's my question,when would I want to slow it down ?

VS is really important for spinning large diameter bits like 3" panel raisers. Big bits need a slower rpm. It's safest if the router is table mounted for big bits. If you're strictly spinning smaller bits and hand routing VS isn't important.
