a planer or a jointer. You can only have one. (Right Now) Which one do you get?

I seem to recall that exact topic was hashed out a couple of weeks back. Try searching the forum.

There are several ways to get a straight edge using a table saw or router etc and it's not too often I need to do the face of a board so I would get the planer first.

I went 25 years without a thickness planer till one day there was one on sale that I could not resist. I have used it some but the jointer is still used more and is more important to me.

The choice mostly depends upon the type of wood you will be using. If you want to purchase rough sawn wood then the planer may be best.

Default I had seen that but......

It's still as clear as mud. I was looking for a few more thoughts on the subject..

Default Clearly the choice is a planer

You can joint edges on the table saw or router table or with a straight edge and guide and a circlular saw or router and of course a Festool or Dewalt guided saw. Lots of choices!
So I'd get the biggest, baddest, widest planer I could afford, and use a planing sled like this: http://modernwoodshop.com/2008/06/18...a-planer-sled/
There are other sleds but this is the idea:
To plane a warped or cupped board, shim the board to be stable on the sled, attach the shims with tape or hot glue, run the board through the plane to make the top surface parallel with the sled surface. Flip the board over without the planer and you've got a uniform thickness board. bill
There's also a cool sled for a router, an actual sled!

Search planer sleds and find:

Jointers?:Jointers?
A site search here "jointer vs planer" found these: http://www.woodworkingtalk.com/searc...earchid=223209
