Default Need help with Delta Planer 22-580 speed control

I have a Delta Planer 22-580, and tonight, I broke the speed control. I was doing a lot of planing, and I must've changed the speed control while the motor was off. It seems to be locked in the high speed position. Also, I found a piece of black plastic belt inside the housing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The piece of belt you found is your drive belt getting ready to self destruct. replace it before you try to get your speed control working. Once you have the new belt installed, turn on and gently try to switch speeds, may take as many as a dozen tries. Don't force it!!! If nothing is broken, it will eventually fall back into time. If not one of the gears has broken(I don't remember if it is plastic or metal, but you should find tooth pieces in the bottom of the gear housing.
I worked for Delta for a long time, in the re-conditioning shop, and we saw a lot of this.
If your handy, replacing the gear is not a big deal, But the guys at yor DeWalt Svc Ctr can get it going for you if the parts are available.
I'm not promoting, nor bashing Delta, they've jjust changed since B&D bought them,
