I like mine, but I've never tried to do any maintenance work to it yet. It's a good tool for the price, if you don't have to spend 200 on new heads or something.

How bad do you need a surface planer? If not desperate I might thunk on it for a bit.

$40 is not a bad deal at all. I would caution you to take a close look at the head and rotate it to see if the bearings are still good.
It may be just bad blades, as in hitting nails and staples.
