Default Delta Drill Press Depth Stop

I have a DP, don't know the model offhand and I am at work so I can't check. It has the collar with the ball you can press to move the stop quickly. The problem is that if you aren't carefull when you feed you can actually make the stop move and then you are too deep. Has anyone subsitituted the old style spin down depth stop for one of there?

Thanks

George

I am not familiar with the press you have, but would this work? Drill and tap a hole in the ball for a set screw.

Thanks for the suggestion GeorgeC, the ball is spring loaded so I doubt a set screw in the ball would work but a set screw somewhere else in the collar might work.

Thanks for the idea.

I have the Delta 17-965 drill press. It has the quick-set depth stop you described. My first suggestion is to inspect the treads on the back side of the push button, and the collar. The stop was defective on my DP when I got it; half the threads were missing. Delta sent TWO replacements. I can only guess why they sent two, but I use them both - one above the other.

No, I'm not paranoid! Although the replacement is far better than the defective one, it can skip a thread if you apply to much pressure. The second depth stop helps prevent skipping threads. I find this setup works well enough for me!

If your machine is still under warranty, I would call for a replacement, even if the threads look good; you may have a weak spring.
