Hello everyone, just stumbled upon this sight a day or two ago and it seemed pretty legit

I was born and raised in California and I'm currently living and going to college in San Luis Obispo. I got into woodworking freshmen year of high school and love it. In high school I built a shelf, box, cabinet, coffee table, and a fold up ping pong table. I'm gonna try to get a picture of at least the coffee table up.

For the first two years of college I've been on a woodworking hiatus and I've decided that I'd like to pick it back up in my spare time, over the summer I built a pretty nice bass wall mount/frame and I'm currently working on a pretty sick end table

Hi Folks,

I've been a amateur sledgehammer carpenter for a long time, building ugly but functional things from garbage, mostly. I got the bug for trying "pretty" about the same time my only child arrived a couple years ago, and now that she's a little more self sustaining there's finally some time to spend in the shop again.

"Shop" right now means a basement of a home in central PA. The home needs a lot of work, and first on the list is repairing the framing problems of the first floor, so the "shop" is a jungle of jack posts, things that don't yet have homes, and the tools and bench for my current project, which is to make a dust barrier system similar to the zipwall. (I have more time than money at the moment.) The fun part of this job is to design and build the drilling jigs and glue up jig.

More about that, with pics, if it works.

Hi all,

I'm new to woodworking, took a class in high school 10 years ago but that's it. I recently built my first 2 projects which I posted on the display forum. After I built my latest piece, I realized how little furniture I had in my new home. So now I set a basic shop up in my basement and now starting to collect tools.
For my living room, I'd like a "matching" sofa table, end table, and tv stand but am completely lost on what kind of wood/finish I should do. I'm thinking about cherry with natural finish... but... I don't know...
Glad to be here and see you all around.

My name is Ted Bateman and I just registered after reading a few posts that came up when I had googled "building a shaving horse" . Looks like a good bunch willing to help and share knowledge.
I have enjoyed woodworking ever since I took it as an elective in collage, East Tenn. State Un. Which is where I am from originally. All of my experience thus far has been with power tools, from portable to stationary. However a few years back we sold the house and my garage full of woodworking tools:sad:, and bought a condo. I missed having my garage to tinker around in so much that, after talking it over with my wife, I am now in the process of converting a spare bedroom into a small shop. My wife has asthma so that means little to no sawdust. So this shop will be almost strictly "OLDSCHOOL". A workbench, shaving horse, hand planes ect. I do have a few power tools though, a Craftsman 12" bandsaw, Delta benchtop drill press,Rikon midi lathe and a Dewalt 788 scrollsaw.
After I finish setting up the room and learning how to do thing with hand tools I want to concentrate on learning to make chairs by hand. Sorry for the post being so long but that pretty much covers where I've been, where I am now and where I want to go.

Looking to get familiar around here prior to possibly making a sale on the forum in the future, or at least learning how to.

I am an accountant and have been asked to broker a sale of my stepdad's shop equipment. More on this when the time is right, and I have more information.

In the mean time, I figured I would introduce myself and see if there are any pointers for conducting a sale of this sorts. As a desk jockey I am a bit out of my league.

I am pretty familiar with second hand e-commerce as I am an active member of watch forums. so I know the standard stuff for making sales always applies...lots of pics, good descriptions, and a willingness to answer questions.

Outside of this is there anything industry related I should prepare for?

Boy am I glad to have found this. I'm in the process of remodeling my master bedroom, and have a couple DIY projects I want to try. I'm pretty handy, have plenty of standard tools, and really enjoy when I get a chance to use them. But I'm by all means, a beginner. The last project I built was this small shelf (below) for my wife. She didn't want a desk, she prefers to work from the kitchen table, but needed a place to keep all her laptop and papers and such.

By day I'm a programmer. But my main hobby is pinball. I buy, sell, trade, and collect pinball machines. I also repair and restore them. They're great because they're a wonderful mix of mechanics, electronics, and artwork. Not to mention, a game that you can play when it's all done!

Hello to you all my name is Don Mc Donald and I live in Melbourne Australia.
I did a apprenticeship in Carpentry and Joinery back in the sixtys and still love working with wood and it is only over the last 9 years that I have had a propper workshop which I spend a lot of my time in.
I have just finished a fix out of a extension at my daughters house and starting a Decking and staircase (external) at my other daughters I am retired and very cheap labour.
Hope over time I can come in on woodworking discussions.

Hi, I'm kind of new here. I signed up a few months ago, but haven't had any time to visit.

I live in a rural area in Oregon. I mostly build historic wood toys and games. I'm not really a beginner, but I'm not a pro either, so I guess I'm somewhere in between.

I also like woodburning, and sometimes a little carving or lathe work. Mostly I just experiment.

Anyway, I'm glad to be here and I'll look around a bit. then I'll get a couple of photos up.

Hello!
Thought I would introduce myself. I have been working with wood in some form or fashion for close to 25 years. I took the plunge into turning about 7 years ago and turn mainly bowls and small vessels. I hope to share some of my ideas and learn a thing or 2 while i am on here. For comfort reasons, I usually take a hiatus from wookwork during July and August (it was 107 last monday here!) I am looking forward to getting back in the shop once my small AC actually has any affect on the temp out there!

Hello from a hilltop in the Va mnts.Semi retired multi generational builder here. Our family building roots traced way back.Suffice it to say its in the blood.

We live in an 1820 Federal period repro I built almost 30 years ago.Spent way too much time in historic preservation work....to the effect that it has completely warped any sensitivity I have WRT to fine woodworking/architecture.

Lovely 3k sq ft shop with ALL the bells N whistles.Have a complete machine shop as well.Lots of welding equip.;Really enjoy the peace and quiet of our TIG bench. There's lots of windows on shop looking at the mnts.

Am somewhat digitally challenged,in posting pics and stuff.Alot of our biz over the years surrounds around hand drawn original artwork. We do conceptual art backed up with extensive,in depth knowlege. So its a little "more better" than whats avail. through normal channels.Rarely a project goes through shop without some kind of drawing. It may or not be ruled/scaled.

Very nice site.BW

Hello from the Twin Cities. I'm a law student who enjoys woodworking as a hobby. I have a small workshop that I recently upgraded with some better equipment (mainly as a result of having to donate most of my tools to my father 2 years ago when I moved up here). It's not much, but it's all I can afford on a law student's budget, plus I can't really fit much in the space I have anyways. I also have the problem of two pets that I have to consider with all of my tool purchases to avoid setting up a dangerous situation - but that's another story altogether. Anyways, I came here hoping to learn and improve my skills. I look forward to meeting you all on the forum.
