I have been wanting to make a trip down to my buddies brand new dropzone 2 hours away in Huntington WV. I haven't made but 1 skydive in 2 years and only a handful in the past 4 years. Before that I went every weekend and to every single event I could. I told him yesterday I was going to come down and spend the weekend but after 200 jumps I just don't have the desire to go like I used to. If I do go its gonna cost me $50 for the refresher jump and another 30 for each additional because I gotta bumb a rig and pay a packer cause well I have pretty much forgot how to pack a parachute its been so long. I can probably make my 200th jump this weekend to.

If I stay home I can save alot of money and get alot done in my shop and actually make money. But I'm not greedy and if I make more money the wife will spend more money.........lol

We've been re constructing our decks. Made a very bad decision 12 years ago and built them all from untreated fir except for the piers, which are...

We've been re constructing our decks. Made a very bad decision 12 years ago and built them all from untreated fir except for the piers, which are redwood. Then, my wife had an automatic watering system installed for her trees and plants around the house, including bordering the decks. The constant moisture exposure, even though EVERYTHING was painted with good primer and oil based paint, began to rot.
The main deck is 25X20, with two smaller decks of 10X12. All the rim joists (headers) and about half of the interior joists had to be replaced. These decks are all free standing and, in certain areas, as much as 5' off the ground. None of the deck areas were roofed.
So, while we were at it, we decided to roof the main deck. This required 14 new 4X4 redwood posts and numerous hand mixed wheelbarrow loads of cement. Not to mention a bunch of 2X8 rafters, hurricane ties, rafter hangers and tiedown straps for each rafter. I went wild with the Simpson catalog. We get wind gusts of 50+ MPH occasionally and 25-30+ regularly during our May and June windy season.
We researched a lot of composite decking and finally decided to go back with wood. We wanted to use Ipe, a very hard and rot resistant wood, but could not justify the cost plus shipping and saw blades. So, we opted for Redwood. It looks good and, with an application of a product called Cetol from Sikkens, should be maintenance free for at least 5 years. Especially with a roof to protect most of it from the sun.
3 days ago, Phyllis and I finished installing the rafters and yesterday, I finished all the steps/stairs (4 sets). Today I'll finish the hand rails. One of our sons and another fellow will install the plywood and metal roof. Wife and I did all the rest of the work, but at 62 and 70 years of age, neither of us feel too good about getting on that roof and manhandling those materials. The last roof we did was also 12 years ago, for our woodshop. We won't be doing any more roofs.
As soon as I finish the hand rails on the steps, we'll be heading for the cabin for 4 days of R&R. Then back at it, passing materials up to the roof.
Our other son and wife and two grandkids (2 and 4 y.o) will be coming for a visit from Okinawa on 10/1/10. So we've been pushing hard...shoulda started sooner, huh?

BTW, Pics to follow when we get back.

I can't wait to get back to the shop!

I was going to make this post before you said this in another thread. I would like to know about your experiences in dealing with sellers on ebay, good or bad.
I'm leery about it especially on big ticket items. And after hearing about Chippin-In's experience, I just not sure.
I'm considering buying a Weld pak 180 MIG Welder. I know this has nothing to do with woodworking, so why am I asking here? I've received a lot of good advice, and I feel I could trust your advice given here. Besides, I know a lot of you repair your own equipment, or like me want to make things in other media, so I may even get feed back about the welder itself. It would be welcomed too.
The Seller has a 99.9% rating and is selling that NIB unit for $490. Comes to $540 after shipping. Considering what you'd pay at the BORG of $670 plus Tax, seems like a good deal. My hesitation is that others on ebay sell identical packages NIB for $550 to $650 (shipping extra). Can this Seller be trusted? Or is this something that is too good to be true? How can he sell it that much cheaper then others?
Back to the welder. Any pros or cons?
Thanks for reading.

Because there's no PM's, I'm offering this message just to help. Every year before Christmas, I get a lot of PM's asking about my impression of certain gifts.

Some gifts that are received were given with all good intention. You may receive a gift that you have certain doubts about, and I might be one of many that you would confide in. This has never happened to me or anyone I know, but in case you receive this gift, I'll offer the following:

Try not to be seen wearing this in public.

If you have to run to the store, or make an emergency beer run...cover your face.

Your children or relatives can see you in this if you provide a lengthy explanation.

Don't get caught driving drunk wearing this, and subsequently have to go to jail.

Try to maintain the quality of this outfit, as in the future there may come a perfect occasion.

Not really a good outfit to work in.

Explain to your parents (if they are still alive) it's not their fault.

Have your "It was a gift" story prepared...in case anybody asks.

It may scare your pets.

I'm offering these tips just in case you get one of these. No need to thank me.

I got a question. I have several computer programming books sitting, collecting dust and sadly out of date :furious: I have a couple options with these books:

1) Just toss them in the landfill for more waste
2) Keep them
3) Donate them to some Vets via the local DVA

I figure some one with not a lot of money would may have an older PC and may be interested in learning about Java, CSS, Web page building, PERL, Flash, Fireworks 3, Frontpage 2000, C/ C++, ADO 2.6 to name a few. Even have a book on red hat linux that I have lost the CDs for.

A few of these books may have CDs with them, but most are out of date.

I asked another group of people and was rudely told not to dump my books off on other people and just toss them in a landfill  I thought they may help someone else. I thought this would be a good way to recyle the info in some of these books. Maybe a computer was donated to some one and they want to learn how to program?

What are your thoughts? If any Vets are here (Thank you for your service) I would like your thoughts as well

While at the veterinarian today with the dog, the doc was telling me of one of his clients that is trying to sell her home. He said she was discounting it to $3 million. It's in an incredible development. There are some sports figures living there. The homes average $5 million and up, and about 20,000 sq.ft. and up, with a 3,000 - 4000 sq.ft. in-law house, and 4 car garages. Lot sizes are 2 acres and up.

The VA has reduced the paperwork for ease of filing and sped up the process by shortening an application and adding new ones to their website.
For veterans making an initial claim for disability compensation or pension benefits, the form has been shortened from 23 pages to 10. VA Form 21-526.
For veterans seeking an increase in benefits for conditions already determined to be service connected VA Form 21-526b.
For VA forms, http://www4.va.gov/vaforms/
VA's application site: http://vabenefits.vba.va.gov/vonapp/main.asp

The VA has two new forms for veterans participating in the new Fully Developed Claim (FDC) program, which the VA says is "one of the fastest means to receive a claims decision." To participate in FDC, certification, veterans should complete and submit an FDC certification VA Form 21-526EZ for a compensation claim, or VA Form 21-527-EZ for pension claims.
Each is six pages and if completed correctly , contains enough information for vets to "fully develop" their claims before submission to the VA.
